2 first weeks
Hello!This my first post which was supposed to be written last week. A busy week and a confusion of how to set up a blog make me write it now :( Anyway I open this blog so I can write my progress in Camperwell College of Arts, some news and opinions. This is my 2nd MA and I feel quite excited being student again but also a bit bored to get through again the first days in the University. Only the first days ;)
Here we go then.
Week 12/09-18/09/05- First week of the course and the full time students introduce ourselves in the class.
-Andy Stiff, the course organizer welcomed us and got through the university's note book
-and show us in a projection some general information about access in the blackboard, athens, e-mail, library of the University.
-we got to know an outline of our schedule so we can roughly plan our work.
-Finally we arrange our next lesson in next week.
Week 19/09-25/09/05On wednesday's lesson we met up with the part-time students who are doing the second half of their course. Obviously they focus better on what they are going to do with their project which is quite helpful for us to get advises and suggeestions from them on our project.
So on wednesday :
-we introduce ourselves both part-time and full-time students
-A general discussion took place of what we propose to research*
-Every single of us had also a feed back from Andy and the rest of the students on our idea.
*Here I am going to write what I proposed for my project :
For my research project I decided to make a short movie which I think fits better to my background and my profession expectations. The film is going to be narative based on 1 or 2 main (human) characters acting in a sophisticated concept like urban life, religion or modern society. I will have the chance to criticise and express my beliefs or feelings on the theme.
The treatment is inspirated by the modern british film-makers and french 3d animators. It will be a compination of 2d background made by the use of layers, alpha-channels,blue screen footage and the action by 3d characters rendered as 2d, giving a more traditional cartoon effect.
For the general mood of the film I look at German Expressionist fims like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari of 1919,or Tim Burtons Vincent, and Red Hot Chili Peppers music video Other side directed by Jonothan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This doesn't mean that it will be definately dark and depressing but it will focus mostly on the combination of 3 strong styles:Surrealism, Expressionism and Cubism.
The feed back I received is that I haven't put effort in the presentation (and the concept i must add). Right I cannot disagree, of course I had some thoughts but also only about five minutes to express them.1st I didn't like to say something crazy just because I have to say something (The fact that no one understands you doesn't make you an artist) and neither wanted to say 2 or 3 complicated scenarios in the package of one (if you cannot convise them confuse them. Harry Truman.)
On Thursday the symposium took place something new for all of us including Andy Stiff;) -he did it good /well done Andy. It was a conference with Interactivity as specialist subject. We changed interesting i belive opinions and i am going to list some of themThe groups of interaction are
-object interactivity
-linear interactivity
-support interactivity
-update interactivity
-construct interactivity
-reflective interactivity
-simulation interactivity
-hyperlinked interactivity
-non immerse contextual interactivity
-immersive interactivity
Then we had a talk if interactivity is in both ways, art and audiance or obseravational and some related topics like o- line communication and if it's necessary for the creator, the artist or whoever presents the interactive piece to give instructions.Writing my opinion on this academic subject wanted to say that for me Digital Art, is art imported/made or exported digitally audio, visual or both-and can be made by digital camera, digital video-camera,microphone,by computer software like 3d/2d creative programmes, composing programmes or a compination of these. May be a misunderstanding because of the large use of internet and cd-roms made people believe that digital art is related to interactivity. I don't say no it can be as well, all whales are mammals but not all mammals are whales ;)
I also heard the opinion that english people or the people who visit UK are not very familiar to interactive art for instance in a museum.I disagree, I have been in the Natural History Museum where the 50% is based on interactivity and the people are more that eager to try everything.
On-line communication. I think the using-a-tool-communication is on it's acme, never before a person could communicate so fast and so cheap- no matter the distance, no matter the number of the listeners. The only bad point for me is that the people can hide their real ID and present themselves as they would like to be. So most of the time on-line communcation is place of almost perfect people something like classic greek art or baywatch tv programme :)

The previous days I was thinking what i would like to propose as project and presentation. In other words what is the concept? what is the missing paragraph of my project's outline. I come up then with this idea.
THE POINT is that most of the modern people in an urban life try to catch everything- try to focus in 2 different lives career and fun, experienses at the same time, which is very difficult almost imposible. And in the end of the day they complain that they should put more effort on one life or another.
IN the presentation room we have two projectors projecting two different films on opposite walls at the same time. The films are narative, are the stories of two totally different characterwise men living in the same metropolis-city. The one wakes up early in the morning goes to work (office job), does seminars in a University, finishes always late, goes home tired reads to chill out and goes to sleep (lonely). The other guy tries to go for job-interviews but always late, has fun with friends, smokes,drinks, takes drugs, every night out,scores with girls. The two movies will be synchronized so as the two men will interact, talking sometimes to each other or meet up in the tube station etc. These two men are the alter-ego of each other. In the middle of the room I am thinking to put a table with drinks, cigarettes and fruits. The audience will try to focus in 2 opposite projected films (difficult or imposible) and i want to check what short of preferenses they have bad/good habits or both.The first idea was to make 2 modern women as main characters because they try even more to catch everything fun,career,family etc but i am afraid that i will fail to understand totally their ambitions or psychology. Then i decided that will be the same sex as the creator ;)
